Music teaching on the go
Natalie Scalia began her studies at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith university in 2014. Within the courses and environment provided by the prestigious University during her undergraduate degree, Natalie gained substantial experience in under the tutelage of Oleg Stepanov, and Diane Selmon. During this time, she became especially interested in pedagogy, music history, and performing in chamber ensembles. In 2017, Natalie completed her Bachelor of Music with first class honours. Her dissertation was a combination of interests, looking at the historical practices of teachers within the Brisbane area during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Natalie continued her professional development in 2019 by undergoing a Master of Music Studies, majoring in piano pedagogy. Studying under Mark Griffiths, Leah Coutts, and Gemma Carey, Natalie acquired many practical, industry-specific skills that have greatly impacted upon her approach to teaching.
Alongside beginning her tertiary education in 2014, Natalie also began her mobile teaching business, Muse Tuition. Through her industry experience and tertiary education, Natalie has developed a student-centred teaching approach that encourages students to be independent, exploratory, and goal-driven learners. In addition to her teaching, Natalie has also gained over 8 years of experience in accompanying a wide variety of ensembles and soloists for examinations (both at tertiary level and AMEB levels).
In future, Natalie plans on continuing to grow as a pedagogue, accompanist, and researcher through further postgraduate studies. Her aspiration is to become a reputable researcher and passionate teacher who helps contribute to the growing Australian music culture.
